“Great Garden Companions is a book as fresh as the first spring carrot, as new as a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis. Sally Cunningham's gentle appreciation for the intricacies of nature coupled with plenty of practical, hands-on gardening experience makes her book both useful and soul-satisfying. Her garden plans are doable and earth-friendly, and her guide to backyard beneficial insects is invaluable. This book deserves a place in the library and hearts of concerned gardeners everywhere.” —Sharon Lovejoy, author and illustrator of Sunflower Houses and Hollyhock Days and a contributing editor to Country Living Gardener magazine“Great Garden Companions lives up to its name-- it's great! This very approachable how-to book brings organic gardening to a whole new level-- viewing the garden as part of nature. I have been reading and researching the topic of companion gardening for years. However, everything I have found lists a few companion pairings but nothing else. I purchased Carrots Love Tomatoes: Secrets of Companion Planting for Successful Gardening expecting to find more information on what plants should/could be planted together, etc. While the info was great, it was more like an encyclopedia with individual plant listings. HOWEVER, the next day, this book came in and what a difference! Finally, a book that not only lets you know which plant families do well with others, she goes on to include herbs and flowers in her gardening plans. The author gives you several diagrams of her own gardens (along with many pages of full color photographs) but she encourages you, the reader, to explore any and all possibilities. The author holds nothing back in describing a system of companion gardening that has worked for her. Her enthusiasm and love of gardening is evident and makes reading her book very enjoyable. According to her, companion gardening is not simply about planting basil together with tomatoes, but making your garden a living, breathing, ecosystem that encourages all forms of life to flourish--insect, bird, toad, vegetables, herbs, flowers, trees, etc. to the benefit of everyone. This by far is the best book that I have found on the subject of companion gardening.

This book, along with "Carrots Love Tomatoes" is well worth buying and reading if you do any gardening. These two books are not just for the accomplished gardener; in fact, they are a really good pair for the novice.

This is a personal favorite - this book is not just about what to grow next to what, it's about a comprehensive gardening strategy that develops a strong, healthy ecosystem in and around your garden. The "garden companions" are not only plants, but animals (in the form of bugs - good and bad, house pets, her horse, birds and other wildlife) and materials (such as compost, mulch, cold frames, fertilizers, hoses, etc). The author groups plants into neighborhoods - the tomato, the potato, the cabbage, the squash, the roots and greens, and the perennial crop neighborhoods. Within these neighborhoods, she lists Family members (for instance, the tomato neighborhood includes tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and greens), Friends (in this case, basil, cleome, cosmos, parsley, Queen-Anne's lace and any tall Aster family flower), recommended mulch/groundcover, rotation schedule and notes. There are solid sections on bug identification (pests and beneficials) and detailed crop information, including trouble shooting suggestions.I did run into a few problems when trying to implement her suggestions in my own garden. First, her diagrams had no place specifically for melons or cucumbers. Not a big deal, I'd put them with the other vine crops, but they take up a lot of room and I grow a lot of them, so this has a big impact on my personal crop rotation schedule. When I was try to grow certain flowers for companion plants, I had difficulty finding dwarf varieties, and in some cases my companions outgrew my main crop and had to be trimmed back. I tried planting my corn and squash together (part of the Three Sisters planting), but the squash got ahead of the corn and overcrowded it. I can only imagine what would have happened if I had included beans. The instructions could be clearer as far as timing the crops. I also didn't like grouping my greens and roots, as I like to load up the greens area with plenty of manure, some of which is not as composted as it could be. When the beds filled up with plants, at times it was difficult to access what needed to be harvested because there was so much growing around it.The book is written in a friendly, conversational style, with attractive photo spreads of the author's garden that make you want to get and out and work in the dirt. I like the attention to organic methods and soil building, and the insect information (identification, attracting beneficials, warding off pests) is some of the best I've seen.

One of my favorites, the author did a beautiful job with this piece and her ideas are pretty neat. She made the concepts easy to read and understand. I've made copies of many of the diagrams and added them to my gardening folder. As a writer myself, I'm super impressed with her style! Love, Love, Love this book!

Not very useful, neither is carrots love tomatoes. You can find as much information from a google search, this book is a lot of rambling with some fun garden layouts to try, if you haven't already come up with your own. The part I like most is that the author encourages interplanting flowers and vegetables, but other than that, there's very little fact in here that's established with research more so than hearsay, garden lore is useless. TL;DR of the book, biodiversity is good, avoid monocrops.

This book is awesome. Companion gardening is the way to go as far as I am concerned. Planting neighborhoods keeps it organized and adding green ground covers and weeding less helps with both pests and drought. The only problem I could have with her information is she's in Wisconsin and I am gardening in California. But if I adjust a bit for my longer and hotter growing season, I get a lot of ideas and advice from this book.

I really like this book as she has tried to cover as many garden vegetables as possible. She gives you information on what her experience has been also as well as what knowledge she has obtained for research. Very informative for anyone trying to grow insecticide free and/or new to gardening.

Love this book, I have 3 other books by different authors, and find the information in this book some of the best. I love the way the book is put together and the insightful way the author has of telling it. I just bought this book for my sister in laws birthday, she will be so happy.
