I RECEIVED AN ADVANCED COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEWI felt like a lot of the poems in the beginning were just okay. It seemed like anyone could have written them. They weren’t super deep and I didn’t envy the words Hancock strung together, wishing I had thought of things so clever. 2 was better. 3 is utterly fantastic. 4 was kind of meh for me, but the last poem was strong. 5 was also kind of meh. 6 is also pretty fantastic. As a whole, I LOVE seeing the progress as she learns to love herself, and the last poem on it, relationship status: taken and happy. It feels like there’s a lot of plot in this book and that’s one of the cool consistencies it keeps coming back to. I love the introspection during the ocean section, the honesty in struggling with selfishness. I love that you can see maturity not just in the poetry, but in her. Reading this feels like seeing her grow up, falling in and out of love over and over again. I liked how it was split up into different sections and the illustrations that went along with them. I like that each love was a different color. It’s tough because I like to reference poems I like individually when I write a review, but these don’t necessarily have titles, so it’s harder to. Unless you have the book in front of you, telling you the page numbers I love doesn’t help too much. Some end with a - and italicized phrase, so I’ll go with that. The ones that stood out to me are: -A small disclaimer, -I was wrong, -the beginning, -The poems said you would save me (and the follow up poem on 44), -on second chances and when to give them, -my answer, -renovation, -one last kiss, -ode to salzburg.I also liked a poem on page 29 talking about repetition; one about a relationship leading to a form of writer’s block on page 43; a heartbreaking one on 76; a realization on 100; ones on love on pages 101, 232, and 239; and ones on self-love on pages 15, 102, 204, and 231, which was crafted with beautiful vine imagery.I’ll end this review with one of my favorite lines, “i miss you, still. not sadly, but happily. with a smile on my face.â€
I received an advanced copy for a fair and honest review.Shades of Lovers by Catarine Hancock is a collection for all young lovers trying to find that magic within others and themselves. Splitting the book up into different sections, different shades, brilliantly showcases Hancocks progressions from loving someone to loving herself, to loving someone and herself all at once. The collection is not all sappy romance, it's not filled with just "okay" poems, it's a collection packed with feeling, creativity, meaning, and power. There are short poems, long poems, even some prose, each capturing and reflecting an abundance of emotions. My favorite section was Ocean Blue. Catarine does a fantastic job showing maturity and accepting that it's not bad to not love someone, but it is to make them think you do. I also loved the poems all about finding self-love, (and practically every piece in Emerald Green) uniquely phrased as a relationship status. I am positive when I say, reading this collection is something you won't want to miss out on.
* I received an ARC in exchange for review, but all opinions are my own *Catarine is one of my favorite poets of all time, and her collection, Shades of Lovers, did not disappoint! I was extremely excited to be able to read an ARC before the book was released. I sat down to read it and never wanted to stop. I never wanted this collection to end. With her writing, Catarine reminds everyone that it’s okay to love and feel, no matter your age, no matter what happens. This book is split into several different sections, each exploring different perspectives of different relationships. The way Catarine delves into her past and creates colors out of it is amazing. She really creates a story within her pages, evoking so so much emotion. Catarine takes us through her experiences with love and makes the reader feel valid and important in anything they themselves have experience.Shades of Loves is absolutely amazing. I cannot wait until I’m holding a physical copy in my hands and am able to bookmark all my favorite poems (spoiler: there were A LOT of them.).
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book, including the theme of young love, and the creativity and formatting of the poems. There are long, prose-like poems and short poems. There are list poems and poems that read like a script with dialogue. It's a great collection of poems about love--from romantic love to self-love. Great work!
Catarine Hancock's Shades of Lovers is one of the most incredible, heartfelt poetry collections I've read. I received an ARC, and reading through it, I couldn't pick a favorite. I cried, reading some of her deepest poems, and she spins such an incredible love story into five others. This book has definitely made it into my top three, and it is a must read for every single person who has been in love, who is in love, and who is looking for love. Catarine's writing is so intensely deep and it can make anyone feel what she was feeling, in each part. This book is absolute perfection.
This collection is absolutely stunning. I recieved an advanced reading copy in exchange for my honest thoughts on it, and to be quite honest, it's unlike anything I've read before. Catarine has such an impeccable way with words and this collection is marvelous!
I have read all of Catarine Hancock's books and I've got to say this one is definitely my favorite. The separation of themes and lovers kept me on the edge of my seat and on the brink of tears. Her writing is beautifully worded and truly relatable for most young adults.
