One great read. Spoiler alert. This one starts with Jeremy Breckenridge waking up in his big bed. Jeremy had been and Army Ranger with five years to go before he retired. He's spent time in the sandbox and been deployed many times. His wife Irene had taken the his two daughters, Melissa age 9 and Jennifer age 12 to Breckenridge Valley. The entire valley is owned by his mom and dad. It was the place he wanted to retire to when he left the Army in another five years. That didn't happen. Irene died of an aneurism and Jeremy left the Army to take care of his girls. He hated to leave as he loved Army life but knew he owed it to his girls. Once home his Dad started easing him into The Plan. The Plan was something his father and grandfather had been working on for decades. The Plan involved turning the valley into a place that could survive an EMP, CME or nuclear blast. There were cattle for meat, chickens for eggs, horses for patrolling and draft horses for plowing and heavy work if it came to that. The buildings in the entire valley were hardened to survive and EMP or CME and bunkers were in bottoms of the houses to survive and nuclear explosion. Now that Jeremy is retired his Dad needs his help with updating The Plan. Gramps had died a few years ago but Gram was still alive and she knew all about The Plan. Many of those living outside the valley also knew about The Plan and if anything happened they and their families would be welcome. Everyone coming in had a skill that would be needed. Of course everyone hoped nothing happened so they actually had to implement The Plan but it was always better to be prepared.Jeremy had some of his retired Ranger buddies living in the valley. If anything happened they would be the quick response team. His Ranger buddies were men he had served with and he trusted them with his life. The updates on the Plan were going well when Jeremy gets a call from and old college buddy living in California. He gives him the word by code that something is going to happen with the weather. Code for CME.So begins one damned fine read. This one has Jeremy, his Dad, Buzzer, Mike, Scott, the rest of his Rangers, Mom, Melissa, Jennifer, the 300 people who move into the valley, Dr. Sherrod, a Jeremy who doesn't think its such a great idea to have all these people in the valley, his Dad who had planned for it, his Mom who is one smart woman, the town of Huntsville, the town of Oneida, The Lloyd Mountain militia, the Sheriff, the Commander of the National Guard, a Jeremy and his QRF which comes handy to have, trained Rangers as opposed to untrained civilians and militia wannabe's, solar power that provides electricity to the valley and parts of Huntsville, a Deputy Sheriff who is a killer, a Jeremy and his men who are more than up to the task of dealing with a militia and an insane Deputy and Jeremy Breckenridge doing his best to save who he can, protect his daughter and the valley, survive and stay alive.Five Stars. Waiting for number 2

I always enjoy writers take on what preparing for the end of times consists of. It always consists of a ton of money but apart from that, I enjoyed seeing how he spent the money. The problem with all these books is the same old bad guy scenario, but that is kind of the nature of this genre. I will read the second book to see where he takes this though I think we already know from book one.

Truly hope that there is a sequel. The Breckinridge family is unique in the post apocalyptic world, in they had an ancestor that believed in being prepared

This is a quick moving read. Didn't want to put it down. Couldn't tell what was going to happen next. This family had to have a boatload of money to do what they describe but I was ok with that part. Is a book afterall. How nice it would be to order all and everything you need or want and just wait for delivery. I really liked it. I would recommend it.

This was written so everyone could understand the story. I first read this with Kindle Unlimited, but enjoyed it so much I went ahead and purchased it. I can not wait for the second and hopefully the third in the series,

This takes a good look the world post-CME and it is often very grim, as would likely be the case in such a scenario. A lot of first part of the book involves the main character becoming re-acquainted with his prepper parents/valley and it is a while before they even know a disaster is coming. There is a great deal of detail about what they had done and what they are doing and while I found a lot of this detail fairly interesting, the plot line and character development suffered and it was a relief to know the CME was coming. There are a lot of military acronyms, some of which I knew and some that I had to guess. The editing was pretty good with not a lot of spelling or grammar errors. The writing style was terse and fragmented, using a lot of short sentences, so it gave the book a kind of staccato-flow. There are a few spots of action and then back to the mundane, though the sequence with the Huntsville deputies was generally well done.

This book often turned into pages upon pages of lists or just being told what is happening. At times I understood the need, but it got pretty boring. I started thinking of that writer's addage about "show don't tell" and how this book breaks this rule over and over again. It did a good job of telling a story about a small town trying to survive a CME. It was interesting at times, but lacked much in the way of dialogue. I wasn't connected to any characters, including the main character, it just felt like the story was being laid out as one big plan with little bits of dialogue thrown in there. I gave it a 3 start rating solely b/c I though the premise was decent and the telling parts were intersting at times, but couldn't keep me interested. Only read half the book, maybe it changed later on, but regardless it felt like work to read that far.

Well some parts of the book seem to bogged down in minutia , this book seems to be well-thought-out well written into his credit the character is tried to cope with everything coming his way . Should such a catastrophic event occur I cannot fathom the amount of anxiety here and hopelessness a parent would have with children . That probably is what is so infuriating about the lackadaisical attitude of people who take so much of our modern civilization for granted and don't even think about what would happen should the " power , food , and social order " ever come to a screeching halt. The scenarios that have been portrayed in this book are mild compared to some extrapolations . I have been reading this sort of fiction for a few years . It is made me think , take some " prudent precautions ", and while these precautions have eased some anxiety like the character in this book I know there is so much that I have not thought of. This book made me think " oh yeah – I forgot about that !" Thank you very much for that. beyond that the book was very entertaining well written and shows just what people can do when they been together and work together a very positive lesson thank you Bill Hodges
