Some readers may be drawn to this memoir based on their love of the ABC series, Fresh Off The Boat. But be warned that the TV series is a sweetened fantasy of Huang's childhood, and this memoir is nothing like the show. This is evident from the first pages in which we see Huang mentally toying with and ignoring a girlfriend. He is a master at rooting out flaws in his girlfriends in order to undermine the relationships. As he wirtes, "When I don't like something, I go out of my way to count the ways." Fans of Huang's VICE TV documentaries will like this book better than I did. I was never able to warm up to and enjoy his stream of conscious-like writing style, his hip hop music references, his syntax, or his obscenities. I am a General Tso's chicken reader, while Huang is serving authentic Chendu spicy fare.Essentially, while Fresh Off The Boat told a story of the third culture kid growing up in Orlando in an immigrant family, this book is sort of Freshly Back on The Boat To Visit China, reconnect with a younger brother who moved to China, find one's roots and explore love (he is a brilliant marketer, since adding the word "love" to a title will multiply book sales). It is sort of like one big therapy session. The most interesting story arc for me was Huang's meeting of a white Italian-Irish woman from Scranton PA in a WIlliamsburg, Brooklyn bar. Growing up in Scranton he writes is just like growing of Chinese. Work hard, expect failure. He lovingly drugs her... well she sort of drugged herself by drinking his codeine laced cocktail. And through the book we follow Huang as he pines for Dena while in China and ponders whether to ask for her hand in marriage when she comes to visit him. Dena, as Eddie writes, when she meets Rabbi and Mei Mei in China, "had a way of absorbing confusing information on a surface level and then wiping the slate clean of awkwardness with her charm." One needs this imporant quality to thoroughly enjoy this memoir.
Eddie's books are not for everyone. I've enjoyed his books because it takes me back to my youth in the 1960's. This story is a no holds bared book about Eddie's life so far, friends, family, work, cooking, culture and relationships, both domestic and international. If you had a wild youth with lots of mistakes or know someone who has, you may get a kick out of this book. Eddie has the advantage of being extremely intelligent combined with a very hard work ethic and willing to take chances. I've read both of his books so far, and will most likely read the third (if it ever comes out) just to see how his life unfolds. Fresh Of The Boat, his first book was kind of like watching a plane crash, that doesn't quite happen. Double Cup Love, Eddie has gotten the nose of the plane up, so I looks like he might avoided disaster. I enjoy his frank style and telling things about his life and thoughts that few people would have the balls to do. If I ever make it to New York, I'm stopping at his restaurant and having Chengdu specialty, duck intestine. If Dena has the guts to try it and actually eat more, I'm game too! Don't read the Prologue, if you do, you might not read the book. After you've read the book go back and read the Prologue if you want, I just ripped it out before I gave it to a lending library in the hopes that people will read the book and get to know Eddie. The Prologue is full of profanity and this book is so much more.
I wasn't even going to review this book but then it kinda bugged me when I started reading other reviews and saw so many that clearly don't "get it" that Eddie isn't some family-friendly sitcom writer. I loved Fresh Off the Boat (the book!) and was pretty skeptical about the TV show taking off until I saw how much they got it twisted, and was not a bit surprised to hear about his reaction to it. I'm not focusing on that topic here though -- still loved that book, and I DO genuinely like Eddie Huang's writing style, all of the slang and "foul language" included. I think it's authentic and refreshing and for me it's pretty funny and easy to follow. However. I've gotta be real and admit that I just didn't really enjoy Double Cup Love. It took me several weeks to finish what should have been a two-day read because I just kept getting kind of bored with the endless descriptions of quite similar sounding dishes. I felt like this book touched on so many things without ever really getting down to business. On the topic of his relationship, especially, I just didn't "see it"...it seemed like there were tons of details and anecdotes missing or edited out that made the impact of the story practically nil. It was like someone telling me how they fell in love with a guy because he had blue eyes, smelled nice, and loved a band they also loved. I'd be like, "Oh yeah? That's too bad". Boring!Maybe it's just me. I dunno. Three stars is about as high as I can go.
