I bough the book so that I can introduce some examples in my lectures on insilico drug design. I enjoyed reading the book, and I have learned something. The professionals can enjoyed reading this book, but also the text should be understandable to the wide audience. I enjoyed that author has presented science and a little of real life stories behind the science.I gave the book four stars, instead of 5 since the author primarily covered areas of his research experience, Most notably there is nothing on different computational methods that have been in development in the last 30 years, also computational methods are not included in discussing the future. I would not go into analysis why computational methods are missing, Simply this book is interesting, and it could have been great if some areas are not missing.In conclusion, if there is a second edition, with few additions it could be a great text to read.Good luck in your lives folks, Cheers.
Many books have been written about the development of new pharmaceuticals. It seems that a majority of these books focus on the scientist and business people involved in the industry and on the deadly diseases that these people are trying to cure. Not so with this book. This book focuses more on the discoveries and technology that make drug development possible.Dr. Stockwell took the time in his book to explain the technology involved in discovering (or generating?) new drugs. You are going to finish this book knowing a lot more about biotechnology than when you started. That said, I can imagine that this book would be challenging to read to people outside the scientific community (I myself am a student).I was a bit disappointed with the ending of the book. The author took great care to painstakingly explain several new important technologies. Then, at the end of the book, the author listed several other remaining technologies, all important, without describing them. I wished he would have spent more time explaining the future uses of siRNA and gene therapy. This is probably because these areas of research are outside the authors field of work, which I infer is Chemistry and not biology.I recommend this text to anyone interested in the drug discovery field.
A great book. The author writes accessibly for the lay person and makes his tale interesting. My son is studying chemical engineering and is interested in biomedical topics, so we are enjoying reading about current happenings in the search for cures to difficult diseases. I appreciate the level of detail presented with the care taken to explain things as directly as possible. I have learned a lot. It is instructive and inspiring to learn of the author's early ambitions, lessons learned and his successes.
Brilliant! I bought this book because I wanted a better understanding of the drug development process. I thought it was going to be an interesting, but difficult, dense topic. To my amazement the author made very complex topics immensely understandable and pleasurable to learn about.It instilled in me a sense of curiosity and wonderment in the drug development process that I never imagined before. Chemistry and biology stopped being dry, rote topics and became living breathing subjects that affect my everyday well-being.Congratulations to the author for his mastery in explaining these challenging topics in easy to understand, accessible language. The book is a great accomplishment.

I like the way Brent writes; my recommendation is to focus on less known stories in drug development. However, this is only a minor issue and I honestly recommend this book to professionals as well as the lay audience.
This is just a wonderful book! It is a delightful reading that will take you from the beginning of the drug discoveries to the latest researches in molecular biology.It is also a book of hope! Step by step, we are discovering the inner workings of the machinery of life.
This is a well written history of drug discovery and future prospects for drugging the undrugable. In summary, there are a lot of drugs but they target only a small percentage of possible targets. Many scientists think that most of the other targets are undrugable and that we will never develop drugs for them. This means that our options for curing diseases from cancer to MS etc are limited or non-existent. The author goes over the history of drug discovery and describes the latest technology that offers hope that the currently undrugable targets may become drugable. It is very wide ranging and thorough with an optimistic ending. The figures could be better and although it is written for the layman it is referenced for the expert which is a little strange.
