Almost all coverage of the Soviet union in WWII discusses the great land battles with the NAZI`s and eventual March to Berlin. This volume covers the destroyers of the Soviet Navy. It is very clear that Russia was not a naval power and not only lacked ship's but also the ability to build them quickly. When done, the destroyers were obsolescent compared to the contemporary ship's of the Allies but also poor at seakeeping and had poorly trained crews. All of the destroyers are covered individually, but many had short careers. There also seemed to be a large number of friendly fire incidents. If you are a naval buff, buy this book as you probably will never find this subject covered any place else.

...a basic introduction to Soviet destroyers of the Great Patriotic War. His volume begins with an overview of the Tsarist naval legacy and the subsequent Bolshevik assumption of naval construction. Touched upon are the tribulations of naval reconstruction between the world wars, the Italian influence and the ultimate reconstitution of Soviet naval assets beginning in the mid-1920's.The author details the wartime operations of Soviet destroyers in 5 chapters each of which is devoted to a specific class of vessel with additional chapters rounding out the story by briefly examining lesser vessels while finally providing a brief conclusion summarizing the technical aspects of wartime Soviet destroyer operations. Not only does he detail specific operations, including fates, but the author briefly notes the modifications and configurations of the various vessels within each class. A suitable number of well chosen photographs and paintings (by Felipe Rodríguez Náñez) make for lively viewing. A brief bibliography rounds out the proceedings although most sources cited are in the Russian language. As a topic easily overwhelmed by the breathtaking and gruesome warfare conducted between the Soviet Union and Germany on land this volume addresses Soviet destroyer forces and is recommended. While not presenting anything like a comprehensive account of wartime operations and action it does serve as an introduction to the vessels available to the Soviets during their conflict with Germany. Combined with the works of Jürg Meister in his Soviet Warships, Volume I (1972) or Meister's similar but not identical work, Soviet Warships of the Second World War (1977), and Breyer's Soviet Warship Development (1992) one would possess a rather comprehensive and serviceable resource on Soviet destroyers. In summation, a fine volume introducing the reader to a little known topic. Let's see more of these.

The building of a Soviet Navy was disrupted, first by the Russian Civil War, then by a prioritization of the Soviet Army and Air Force. In the interim, naval construction capacity withered. The destroyers of the Soviet Navy were composed of surviving Tsarist vessels and a series of make-shift designs. Author Alexander Hill tells their story in this very readable Osprey New Vanguard Series book, with illustrations by Felipe Rodriguez. The book briskly walks the reader through the several classes of destroyers fielded by the Soviets during the war, intended to meet the needs of the Black Sea, Baltic, Northern, and Pacific fleets. The various vessel classes were hampered by inadequate construction techniques, antiquated weaponry, limited sensor arrays, and poorly trained crews. Each class of destroyer gets its moment, and the narrative is nicely supported with period photographs, modern illustrations, and tables of technical data. This reviewer was impressed, not for the first time, with the Soviet willingness to improvise and ruthlessness in pushing overmatched vessels and their crews into combat. Recommended as a concise introduction to the topic.

The Soviet Red Navy was often the stepchild of the Russian military machine well into the 1950's,even though its ships and sailors fought the Germans bravely through what the Russians call "The GreatPatriotic War" of 1941-45, often using that moniker rather than "the Second World War".After the First World War and the destructive Russian Civil War of 1918 to 1921, only about ten per cent ofthe warships of the old Imperial Russian Navy were operational. Some had been destroyed in the fightingwhile others had been scuttled by their crews to avoid capture by one side or the other.Beginning in the late '20's and early 1930's, the Soviet regime slowly began to build up its navy, although the navy wasthird in priority after the Red Army and Red Air Force. This excellently illustrated book shows that the Red Navy was just strong enough by 1941 to join the fight against the Germans when they invaded the USSR. The Soviet Navy ships served in the Baltic and Arctic sea regions, as well as in the Black Sea and even the Caspian Sea as well as in river flotillas on Russia's major rivers. This book concentrates on Soviet destroyer-type ships, which bore the brunt of the fighting against German planes and submarines and even transported Soviet troops to various locations of the fighting in and around the Black Sea during WW 2.

Book covers all the Russian destroyers used in WWII and their development and each vessel history from design to destruction or deactivation. Book has many pictures and maps of battles and the ships themselves. Easy to read and follow along to, makes this book worth the purchase. Not knowing much about this subject before purchasing this book I can say its covered in information about the not so good Russian destroyer force used in WWII.

.. But there are better Books on this subject !

I found this book typical of the some 49 other ones in my library. If you like one you will like them all.

Excellent
